Arbutus arizonica

Arbutus arizonica, the Arizona madrone, is a beautiful evergreen tree native to the Sky Islands of southern Arizona and Mexico, prized for its smooth, peeling red-orange bark and clusters of white flowers. Plant it in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in a sunny to partly shaded location and avoid overwatering, as it is sensitive to root rot. Once established it is moderately drought tolerant, but young trees benefit from supplemental irrigation during dry spells.
