Bengal gram (chickpea) is a warm-season legume that grows best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate, consistent watering. It fixes nitrogen in the soil, making it a great companion plant for a vegetable garden, and requires minimal fertilization as a result. Harvest pods when they turn dry and papery for dried chickpeas, or pick earlier for fresh green use.
