California poppy is a cheerful, easy-to-grow wildflower that thrives in lean, well-drained soil and full sun — it actually performs poorly in rich, overly moist conditions. Direct sow seeds in early spring or autumn and simply scatter them on bare soil, as it resents transplanting. Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering, or let it self-seed freely for a naturalized meadow effect.
