California poppy is a cheerful, easy-to-grow wildflower that thrives in lean, well-drained soil and full sun — it actually performs poorly in rich, overly moist conditions. Direct sow seeds in early spring or autumn and simply scatter them on bare soil, as it resents transplanting.
