Common sweetleaf is a semi-evergreen to deciduous native shrub that thrives in part shade with consistently moist, well-drained acidic soil, making it ideal for woodland gardens in the southeastern United States. Water regularly during the first two years to establish a deep root system, then it becomes moderately drought tolerant. Prune lightly after its fragrant spring blooms fade and mulch heavily to retain soil moisture and protect roots.
