Cowpea is a heat-loving, drought-adaptable legume that performs best in full sun with warm temperatures above 60°F. It is highly tolerant of poor soils and actually improves soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules. Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, water regularly until established, and reduce watering once plants are growing vigorously.
