Devil's tongue grows from a large corm and produces a dramatic, deeply lobed leaf on a single mottled stalk each season, dying back completely in winter — do not discard it during dormancy. Plant the corm in rich, well-draining soil in a shaded to part-shaded location and water regularly while in active growth. The rare and spectacular spathe flower may appear before the leaf on mature corms and carries a strong odor to attract pollinators.
