The elder-flowered orchid is a stunning European terrestrial orchid that produces beautiful yellow or purple flower spikes in spring, but it is notoriously challenging to cultivate outside its native alpine and sub-alpine meadow habitat. It requires well-drained, calcareous soil, specific mycorrhizal fungi associations, and cool temperatures to thrive. This plant is best suited to experienced gardeners or specialist growers with appropriate outdoor rock garden or alpine meadow conditions.
