Field gentian is a charming but challenging wildflower best suited to experienced gardeners who can replicate its native alpine meadow conditions. It requires well-drained, nutrient-poor, slightly alkaline soil and does not tolerate rich compost or heavy feeding. Plant in a sunny to partly shaded rock garden or meadow setting and avoid transplanting once established.
