The greater butterfly orchid is a delicate terrestrial orchid native to European woodlands and meadows, making it very challenging to cultivate outside its natural habitat. It requires partial shade, humus-rich, well-drained calcareous soil, and specific mycorrhizal fungi associations to establish successfully. This species is best appreciated in naturalized settings and is not recommended for typical home garden conditions.
