Heath bedstraw is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial that naturally colonizes heathlands, grasslands, and open woodland edges, making it an excellent ground cover for naturalistic gardens. It prefers acidic, well-drained soils and partial shade, though it adapts well to sunnier positions. Once established it is virtually self-sufficient, needing little watering or feeding, and its tiny white flowers attract a variety of small pollinators in summer.
