Horse-chestnut is a large, stately deciduous tree best grown outdoors in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained soil. It produces spectacular white flower spires in spring and the familiar spiky-husked conkers in autumn, making it a favourite in parks and large gardens. Allow plenty of space as it can reach 25–35 metres at maturity, and water young trees regularly until established.
