Pawpaw is a unique native North American fruit tree that produces large, custard-like fruits with a tropical flavor, thriving in partial shade when young and requiring a well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Plant at least two genetically distinct trees for cross-pollination and good fruit set. It grows slowly for the first few years while establishing a deep taproot, so avoid transplanting once sited and be patient for the first harvest.
