Magnolia virginiana var. australis
Magnolia virginiana var. australis var. australis
Southern sweetbay magnolia is a graceful semi-evergreen tree or large shrub prized for its creamy white, lemon-scented flowers and glossy foliage. It prefers moist, slightly acidic soil and does best in partly shaded to full-sun positions in the southeastern landscape. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and protect roots, and prune lightly after flowering if shaping is needed.
