Ohia lehua is a native Hawaiian tree best suited for outdoor growing in Hawaii or similar humid, tropical climates with well-draining volcanic or acidic soil. It prefers partial shade when young but tolerates more sun as it matures, and requires consistent moisture without waterlogging. This slow-growing tree is challenging to cultivate outside its native range and is best appreciated as a conservation planting or specialty landscape specimen.
