The monkey orchid (Orchis simia) is a stunning terrestrial orchid with intricate flowers that resemble tiny primates, best grown in alkaline, well-drained grassland or a specialist orchid bed. It requires excellent drainage, low soil fertility, and plenty of sun to part shade — avoid rich composts or over-watering, which quickly cause decline. This is a plant for experienced growers; it does not transplant easily and benefits from being left undisturbed once established.
