Red-osier dogwood is a tough, adaptable shrub that thrives in moist to wet soils and tolerates partial shade, making it ideal for rain gardens or stream banks. Plant in a location with at least 4 hours of sunlight to encourage the vivid red winter stem color it is prized for. Minimal pruning is needed, though cutting back one-third of the oldest stems each spring keeps the shrub vigorous and the stems brightest.
