Spiny broom
Calicotome villosa
Spiny broom is a tough, drought-adapted Mediterranean shrub that produces an abundance of bright yellow pea-like flowers in spring, making it an excellent choice for dry, sunny borders and wildlife gardens. It thrives in poor, well-drained soils and requires little supplemental watering once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, but avoid cutting back hard into old wood.
