Star magnolia is a beloved compact deciduous shrub or small tree prized for its stunning star-shaped white flowers that emerge in early spring before the leaves appear. Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in a sheltered spot with full sun to partial shade, protecting early blooms from late frosts which can damage the flowers. Minimal pruning is required — simply remove dead or crossing branches after flowering to maintain an attractive natural form.
