Stiff darnel is a fast-growing annual to short-lived perennial grass commonly found in disturbed ground, roadsides, and agricultural fields. It is extremely adaptable and requires little care, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions and moderate drought. Note that this species is considered a significant weed in cereal crops in many regions and should not be deliberately cultivated in garden or agricultural settings.
