Virginia-sarsaparilla is a low-growing woodland perennial that prefers shady, moist conditions similar to a forest understory. Plant it in rich, humus-rich soil and water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells. It spreads gradually by rhizomes and makes an excellent native ground cover for shaded garden beds.
