Black mustard is a fast-growing, easy-to-grow edible herb that thrives in full sun to partial shade with average moisture. Sow seeds directly in well-draining soil and thin to about 18 inches apart; it self-seeds readily and can spread freely. Young leaves are peppery and excellent in salads or cooked dishes, and the seeds are harvested to make mustard condiment.
