Gray heath is a compact evergreen shrub that demands acidic, free-draining soil and a sunny to lightly shaded position to produce its vivid purple-pink summer flowers. It is intolerant of alkaline or waterlogged conditions, so amend clay soils with grit and ericaceous compost before planting. Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants neat and bushy — avoid cutting back into old wood.
