Indian-pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is a fascinating non-photosynthetic, mycoheterotrophic plant that cannot be grown or purchased as a conventional houseplant or garden specimen. It survives entirely by parasitizing soil fungi connected to the roots of nearby trees and will not survive transplantation. It is best appreciated in its natural shaded forest habitat and should never be collected or disturbed.
