Salal is a tough, spreading evergreen shrub native to the Pacific Northwest that performs best in shaded to partly sunny spots with moist, acidic soil. It is excellent as a ground cover or woodland understory plant and requires little care once established. Avoid alkaline soils and prolonged drought, as it prefers conditions similar to its native forest habitat.
