Shining scabious (Scabiosa lucida) is a charming alpine perennial from the European mountains, bearing glossy, pincushion-like lilac-pink flowers above neat basal foliage all summer long. It thrives in full sun with excellent drainage and alkaline, gritty soils — perfect for rock gardens, gravel beds, or the front of a border. Once established it is quite drought tolerant and needs very little maintenance beyond deadheading to prolong flowering.
