Pacific madrone is a stunning native evergreen tree prized for its peeling cinnamon-red bark and white urn-shaped flowers, but it is notoriously difficult to transplant and establish. Plant in well-draining, acidic soil and avoid disturbing the roots once established. Once settled, it requires minimal supplemental water and does not tolerate clay soils or summer irrigation.
